5G mmWave deployments, low-earth-orbit satellite constellations, and defense radar modernization are converging on a common bottleneck: GaN-on-SiC RF power amplifier capacity. Qorvo and Skyworks — the two leading suppliers of high-performance RF front-ends — both reported tightening allocation through 2026 as Starlink, Amazon Kuiper, and Tier-1 carrier infrastructure orders consume available wafers. For OEMs building anything that transmits above 6 GHz, sourcing has become a planning exercise.

The RF supply story changed materially in 2024–2025 when defense customers and satellite constellation operators began locking up GaN-on-SiC capacity with long-term commitments. Qorvo's power amplifier shipments to defense and satcom customers have grown to a meaningful fraction of total output, and Skyworks has shifted Sky5 module production toward 5G infrastructure as smartphone RF demand stabilized. The net effect is less spot-market availability for industrial and lower-volume commercial buyers.

For designs using SKY-prefix front-end modules or QPA-prefix amplifiers, the practical answer is: order earlier, lock in second-source qualifications, and use independent brokers for the gaps that distribution can't close. Bare-die GaN parts from secondary players (MACOM, NXP, Wolfspeed RF) are becoming common in BOMs as alternates.
